![]() ![]() We use the machines on ordinary suburban lawn grasses such as blue grass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues in a variety of suburban and rural locations. We test our gas-engine and battery-powered string trimmers in identical fashion. Scroll through our reviews to see the machines that withstood our rigorous test. Whether it’s powered by a gas engine or a battery and brushless motor, every machine here gave a good account of itself in our testing. These trimmers are heavier and more expensive than cable-driven trimmers, but they will stand up better to cutting heavy weeds and light brush. Also, if your needs are closer to the heavy-duty end of the work spectrum, buy a machine that powers the line head with a solid steel drive shaft and not a cable. If you need weed-trimming power above all else, they will provide it, particularly if you equip the trimmer with a heavy-duty line. The gas-engine machines here are pro-duty and take a 50:1 gas-oil fuel mix. If noise reduction is important to you, a cordless string trimmer is your obvious choice. A benefit that a battery-powered trimmer provides that a gas trimmer can’t touch is that it’s quiet. Although cordless string trimmers still lack the raw weed-slashing power of professional-grade gas-engine machines, they have narrowed the performance difference. Many people are looking to cordless string trimmers powered by a lithium-ion battery to meet their needs, especially in suburbia. Trimming a large and diverse rural property requires a far more robust power tool than if you live on a 1⁄4-acre lot. The harder you work the string trimmer, the tougher the machine you need to buy. ![]() ![]() Read on for quick info on the best string trimmers from our testing, then scroll down for buying advice and in-depth reviews.Ī string trimmer spins a line head by means of either a gas engine (in almost all cases burning a gas-oil fuel mixture) or it uses a lithium-ion battery and a DC motor. Equipped with an Aero-Flex trimmer attachment, a string trimmer can function as a mini mower for cutting grass and weeds in difficult areas such as on steep banks and ditches. You’ll be glad of this come winter because pavement with a neat edge is easier to clear of snow compared to one that is overgrown. The notch keeps grass and weeds from growing over the pavement’s edge. With a deft hand they can be turned sideways to cut a notch along sidewalks, patios and drives. They can cut down tall grass and weeds to keep border areas under control, either prior to mowing or as an alternative to mowing. Either way, the results should be a neat landscape. Some people mow then trim, others trim then mow (particularly those who bag the clippings). A string trimmer is the indespensible power tool that puts the finishing touches on a yard by shaving off grass that a lawn mower can’t reach. ![]()

Thanks for your, as usual, considered advice, Roger. Open air engines usually didn't have an issue, but tight cowl engines did. This put many up to and or over the max temp for the engine. It was Olivier Messiaen’s unordered series for pitch, duration, dynamics, and articulation from the pre-serial Mode de valeurs et d’intensités which provided the prototype for Pierre Boulez and other Darmstadt composers. This procedure is sometimes called Total Serialism or Absolute Serialism. One of the most important developments of the serialist composers of the 1950s, and after, was to serialize durations, dynamics and articulations, as well as, the pitches. Most often, they would segment the row into smaller units, three notes (trichord) four notes (tetrachord) etc., and use these as motives for development, placing the notes in any register and, in fact, often exploiting octave displacement in a melodic line as much as possible. But Webern was somewhat unique in this regard, since usually Schoenberg and other 12-tone composers would utilize the tone row as raw material for the composition. The preferred term is “pitch class” since this phrase underscores the distinction between the entire class of a pitch as opposed to one specific instance of it.Īnton Webern, however, would repeat the same note in the same register and this later provided inspiration for Philip Glass and other Minimalist composers. As employed by Schoenberg and his school, generally, the row series did not stipulate the octave register for the pitch and instances of the pitches would occur either in a high, low or middle register. Serialism began primarily with Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique, though his contemporaries were also working to establish serialism as one example of post-tonal thinking. Serialism is a method or technique of composition that uses a series of values to manipulate different musical elements. This style became popular long after the other three, but can be viewed as either a continuation of, or reaction against, and heavily influenced by one or more of the other three. They would splice together and layer these audio samples to create musical works.Īlso included in the title to this article is Minimalism. They discovered that if they removed the attack of the sound, the beginning of the audio file, they could create a pure sound divorced from its context. Schaeffer and Henry recorded the sound of locomotive engines, street sounds, doors closing, etc. However, the term “concrete” is a bit misleading for English speakers, since the French term has nothing to do with cement pavement, but might better be translated as “real” sounds. ![]() ![]() Musique concrète was created in the studios of Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, around the same tme. ![]() Indeterminacy, while used earlier by Charles Ives and Henry Cowell, the most important contributions were by John Cage and the New York School including Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and Christian Wolff. Specifically, Serialism was taken up by the composers of the European continent, most famously at the Darmstadt conferences by composers such as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Karel Goeyvaerts and others. Serialism, Indeterminacy, Musique concrète all gained ascendancy between 1948-1952. While these methods of composing have lost much of their initial momentum, their influence continues to effect composers even today. Around the middle of the 20 th century several new compositional styles (while not emerging entirely new) came to represent dominant streams, almost establishing a kind of “common practice”, for at least a few years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Indeed, Szabó's composition "Gypsy Queen" was used as the second part of Santana's 1970 treatment of Peter Green's composition " Black Magic Woman", almost down to identical guitar licks.
